The Department of Instrumentation, originally the university science instrumentation centre ( USIC ) has its origin in 1978 as a service department with the support of the UGC. It has been extending instrumentation support to science and technology departments of the university.The center was elevated to a level lll USIC by UGC in 1990.With this the centre became a full –fledged academic department. The department started a post graduate diploma course in instrumentation in 1994. In 1995 the university re organized USIC into a full-fledged teaching department with USIC contained in it and the department came into existence in its present form.
The department has a very active research programme in the area of instrumentation and applied physics.The department has implemented a number of research projects funded by DST ,DAE,UGC,AICTE,KSCSTE,etc.It has been a venue for a number of national symposia.The department has published a number of research papers pertaining to instrumentation and allied areas.

As a former B.Tech Instrumentation student who graduated in 2002, I am deeply grateful for the profound impact the program had on shaping my career. It not only equipped me with essential skills and direction but also fueled my curiosity to learn more. Fond memories of the vibrant CUSAT campus, hostel life, and cherished friendships continue to resonate with me. This program inspired me to pursue further education, leading to my Masters at IISC, followed by a PhD in the USA and subsequent postdoctoral fellowships. B.Tech Instrumentation holds a special place in my heart as it laid the foundation for my success as a Clinical Data Scientist at Illumina, a leading genome sequencing company dedicated to finding cures for cancer.
The Department of Instrumentation at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) provided me with valuable exposure to real-world scenarios commonly faced by organizations. The curriculum and teaching style emphasized logical thinking, enabling me to approach complex problems, devise high-level solutions, and break them down into manageable parts. The professors treated us as responsible adults, guiding us through the various facilities available. Additionally, events such as Technoquest allowed us to develop our communication, marketing, and management skills. My interactions with a diverse range of subjects and experts on the CUSAT campus contributed to my holistic development.
